If your dogs have not been given preventative heartworm medication properly, and if they have traveled in areas where heartworm infection is possible, it is important to test them for the parasite.

Dogs can only catch heartworms from a mosquito bite – there is no other source.  The mosquitos in the Lake Tahoe basin do not carry the disease.  Northern California, and especially the gold rush country, has a high incidence of heartworm infection.  Dogs are the primary victims of the heartworm parasite.

If you suspect that infection is possible in your dog, it should be tested to determine whether or not it has contracted the parasite.  We do in-house heartworm testing, prescribe heartworm medication, and we treat heartworm disease.
